The FFT R&D Center will mobilize our expertise and Group’s abilities and contribute to society to help realize a society that is comfortable for living. With our material technology, we will help create green-energy cars, high-capacity telecommunication network and wide-bandwidth low-latency data centers.
Furukawa Electric formulated its “long term Vision” for research and development, focusing on the theme of “using technology acquired through our material capabilities to help realize a society that is comfortable for living.” Furukawa FITEL (Thailand) R&D Center also conducts our research on the same vision.
In “Create green-energy cars” towards carbon neutral in the 2050s, the production of essential xEV components including batteries, motors and inverters is expected to grow dramatically, and the need for laser welding that reduces manpower within the manufacturing process is increasing. We have developed passive components and A.I. based manufacturing techniques realizing laser welding technology combining IR fiber lasers with a higher output blue laser. This BRACE™ X can be used for the main applications involving copper materials in xEV powertrains.
In “Build high-capacity telecommunication network”, where speed is transitioning from 100 Gbps to 400 Gbps and beyond, we are developing new types of both pump and signal light sources, as well as active and passive optical component manufacturing techniques also involving A.I. Quality of devices and components is utmost important. Our in-line and reliability testing facilities ensure the superior performances last during product life time.
In “wide-bandwidth low-latency data centers”, there is strong demand to expand the bandwidth for both hyperscale data centers that process big data and edge data centers that realize low latency for Beyond 5G. We are developing an external light source (ELS) for Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) to be adopted in support switch ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) with wider bandwidth of 51.2 Tb/s.
To develop new materials and new technologies, we are integrating the entire Group’s capabilities. In addition to our collaboration with product business units, our R&D Center also works closely with oversea laboratories and affiliates across the Furukawa Electric Group.
In addition to global collaboration, we are committed in promotion of domestic research and development projects by cooperation not only with universities but also with public research institutes and academic society.
Based on the “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” adopted by the United Nations, the Furukawa Electric Group has formulated the “Furukawa Electric Group Vision 2030” which sets the year 2030 as its target and is advancing efforts with the aim to “Build a sustainable world and make people’s life safe, peaceful and rewarding, Furukawa Electric Group will create solutions for the new generation of global infrastructure combining information, energy and mobility.” Toward the achievement of our Vision 2030, we will take open, agile, and innovative approaches to promote ESG management that that aims to increase corporate value over the medium to long term and will contribute to the achievement of the SDGs.
